Welcome to The Tenant Short Film page!

Los Angeles, CA

Logline:
After a creeping suspicion that her boyfriend is cheating on her, Alyssa, a thriller-novel fanatic with an overactive imagination, must uncover the truth before she loses herself in her nightmarish fantasies.
DIRECTOR'S TAKE
The Tenant is a psychological thriller short film. I fell in love with this story line pretty quickly. It takes a deep dive into our insecurities and how we choose to react to them given certain circumstances, like suspecting your partner is cheating on you. Our main character, Alyssa, is shy, unsure of herself, lacks confidence and finds comfort in the world of her thriller novels to help her find answers to her real life problems. This story and world is complicated and messy and I'm excited to take you on a wild journey through the human psyche to unfold Alyssa's world.

As a director, I am beyond thrilled to be making a psychological thriller. It's my absolute favorite genre and I aspire to be like the great Christopher Nolan and revolutionary Jordan Peele. I love films and TV shows that not only entertain but keep us guessing with wild twists combined with fantastic storytelling. I'm hoping to demonstrate those storytelling skills with this short.

I'm also very excited to mentor up to 3 female up-and-coming/aspiring directors so they can learn, ask questions, take note and gain experience while on a real set!
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Tenant will be our second film to go into production. While there is no date set as of yet, we plan on shooting this relatively soon after we shoot our first short, ideally within the month. We are looking to raise $10k to be able to tell this story with all the right visual elements needed to pull it off.

The money raised will be to hire the rest of our crew, cover equipment rental, production design, food, post production and more. We will be casting soon and gearing up to shoot soon! This funding will also allow us to give more hands-on opportunities to women behind the camera, and will provide high quality footage for our actors to put on their reels.
WHY DOES THIS FILM MATTER?
Plain and simple - representation. Made by Latinas, starring Latinas. Representation matters and this film is getting made for many reasons but the biggest one is to continue pushing the limit to what we, as Latinx creators can do to change how we're represented (if at all) in Hollywood.
WHAT COMES NEXT IN OUR ROADMAP?
Once this campaign is over, we'll have a good idea of what our budget looks like, given we reached our goal. Then we will move quickly into locking down a location and setting our shooting dates. Once we’ve finished shooting, we'll head straight into post production. We'll be in post for a couple months while at the same time prepping production for our 3rd and final film, Big Hoop Energy.

Once this film is done, we will begin our year long trek into submitting to film festivals all over the world that would be a great fit to exhibit this film. After that, the hope and goal is to give everyone that worked on this film credit to use for their next creative endeavors, to give the actors some great new updated footage for their reels and give myself, the director, some fresh new work to find representation and break into the industry all while helping move the needle forward with those stats!

Pamela Matew: Director/Producer

Pam, aka Pambition, is a first generation Colombian American. She was born in Queens, NY, raised in San Antonio, and living in sunny LA. She has directed, produced, and edited 9 short films in addition to multiple music videos. Pam’s aspiration and goal as a director, is to be the next female Latinx Christopher Nolan or Jordan Peele. Her favorite genre is psychological thriller and her top two favorite films are Inception and Get Out. She loves to give her audience an artistic "mind fuck". Directing is a lifelong passion for Pam and is ready to knock these out of the park. Lastly, Pam is eager to bring on directing mentees to help bring up the next generation of women directors.

Crystal Mojica: Co-Producer

Crystal was born and raised in southeast Los Angeles. She graduated from the University of Southern California and is currently a Production Coordinator at a major entertainment agency. She hopes to become a creative film producer to develop stories that pertain to Latinx culture, social injustices, and fantasy/mythology. This is her first independent project, and she hopes to continue to build on her expertise and interest. She’s inspired by the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jordan Peele and Guillermo del Toro. Her aspirations include helping to produce an American-Spanish language film that sheds light onto her upbringing in California as a Mexican-American.

Desiree Ewing: Co-Producer

Desiree Ewing is a Fordham University graduate with a deep passion for storytelling, the queer hispanic experience, and the intersection of media and social justice activism. She has developed her writing skills throughout college and at her various industry jobs, including the pieces that she has written and produced for SYFY Wire at NBC Universal and her work in television development at Goodbye Pictures. She dreams of helping to create groundbreaking content that challenges America's perception of identity and pushes our limited views of the self through television during the new golden age. This will be her first independent project as a co-producer!

Jaime Bree: Screenwriter

Jaime started her career as a primary school teacher. Her love of writing grew during her time at Cambridge University, where she studied a B.Ed in Drama. She achieved first class grades in directing and writing and hasn’t looked back since. After taking some time out with family life, she started writing theater plays again but soon realized, because of her love of all things film, that she was destined to become a screenwriter. Jaime has formally been writing screenplays for two years, has won a number of challenges within her local writing group, has extended a 7 page winning biopic based on the life of Bonnie and Clyde into a 23 page short which was then submitted to the Austin Film Festival as her winner’s prize. She is currently working on an urban sci-fi mini-series. The Tenant will be Jaime's first short screenplay, a psychological thriller, to go into production.

Nick Harris: Director of Photography

Nick Harris has been producing and shooting professional video and film content in Los Angeles for over 15 years. He made a name for himself in cinematography, shooting feature films, commercials, documentaries, reality television, promos and music videos for a host of demanding, high-production-value-seeking clients such as National Geographic Channel, Time Warner Cable Sports, James Franco’s Rabbit Bandini, Google/YouTube (the official corporations), IMAX, and FNX Network. His even more extensive background in a multitude of creative arts has always propelled him to rise above the competition with unique ideas in storytelling, atmosphere, and engaging images that communicate succinctly with his audience in a way that sticks with them.

“My goal every time out is to create a living, breathing world; an atmosphere which you don’t want to leave, and can’t wait to revisit once you’ve gone.”
