Welcome to The big hoop energy Short Film page!

Los Angeles, CA

Logline:
When an Afro-Latina’s family shares their opinions on her choice of clothing to an interview for her dream job, she must confront the dualities of her identity and determine whether she needs to sacrifice her culture to land the job.
DIRECTOR'S TAKE
Big Hoop Energy is a dramedy short film. While my go-to is psych-thriller, I am not a one show pony, okay! I am really excited to shoot this particular short! Like the title implies, this film is gonna give you all the big hoop energy you can handle! This one WILL have Latin flavor and general Latin cultural representation with a lot of attitude and poder

Our Afro-Latinx community is even MORE underrepresented on screen than the general Latinx community. My entire family back in Colombia are all Afro-Latinos and I want to represent them the best way I can. So this story and main character is an Afro-Latina and I'm excited to tell this character's story!

This film examines our relationships with our identities and the way that we choose to present them to the world. With multiple female characters taking different positions on the subject, this will be my opportunity to show off my diverse directing chops with humor and emotion on screen. As a fan of Jane the Virgin, One Day at a Time, The Good Place, Devil Wears Prada and Grey's Anatomy,
I’m excited to flex my muscles in other genres.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Big Hoop Energy will be our third film to go into production. While there is no date set as of yet, we plan on shooting this relatively soon after we shoot our second short, ideally within the month. We are looking to raise $10k to be able to give this film all the BIG HOOP ENERGY it deserves!

The money raised will be to hire the rest of our crew, cover equipment rental, production design, food, post production and more. We will be casting soon and gearing up to shoot soon! This funding will also allow us to give more hands-on opportunities to women behind the camera, and will provide high quality footage for our actors to put on their reels.
WHY DOES THIS FILM MATTER?
In 2020, the Fortune 500 list broke records with more women CEOs than had ever been seen before. The number of women that shattered records? 41. That’s only 8.1%, and of those 41, six were WOC, two of those women were black, and none were Latina. This film examines the barriers to entry for women of color, specifically Latina, black, and Afro-Latinas to these big companies, while providing several actresses the opportunity to explore this conversation on screen and showcasing their talent.

Also, representation.
WHAT COMES NEXT ON OUR ROADMAP?
Once this campaign is over, we'll have a good idea of what our budget looks like, given we reached our goal. Then we will move quickly into locking down a location and setting our shooting dates. Once we’ve finished shooting, we'll head straight into post production. We'll be in post for a couple months rounding the final film of our three short films.

Once this film is done, we will begin our year long trek into submitting to film festivals all over the world that would be a great fit to exhibit our film. After that, the hope and goal is to give everyone that worked on this film credit to use for their next creative endeavors, to give the actors some great new updated footage for their reels and give myself, the director, some fresh new work to find representation and break into the industry all while helping move the needle forward with those stats!

Pamela Matew: Director/Producer

Pam, aka Pambition, is a first generation Colombian American. She was born in Queens, NY, raised in San Antonio, and living in sunny LA. She has directed, produced, and edited 9 short films in addition to multiple music videos. Pam’s aspiration and goal as a director, is to be the next female Latinx Christopher Nolan or Jordan Peele. Her favorite genre is psychological thriller and her top two favorite films are Inception and Get Out. She loves to give her audience an artistic "mind fuck". Directing is a lifelong passion for Pam and is ready to knock these out of the park. Lastly, Pam is eager to bring on directing mentees to help bring up the next generation of women directors.

Crystal Mojica: Co-Producer

Crystal was born and raised in southeast Los Angeles. She graduated from the University of Southern California and is currently a Production Coordinator at a major entertainment agency. She hopes to become a creative film producer to develop stories that pertain to Latinx culture, social injustices, and fantasy/mythology. This is her first independent project, and she hopes to continue to build on her expertise and interest. She’s inspired by the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jordan Peele and Guillermo del Toro. Her aspirations include helping to produce an American-Spanish language film that sheds light onto her upbringing in California as a Mexican-American.

Desiree Ewing: Co-Producer & Screenwriter

Desiree Ewing is a Fordham University graduate with a deep passion for storytelling, the queer hispanic experience, and the intersection of media and social justice activism. She has developed her writing skills throughout college and at her various industry jobs, including the pieces that she has written and produced for SYFY Wire at NBC Universal and her work in television development at Goodbye Pictures. She dreams of helping to create groundbreaking content that challenges America's perception of identity and pushes our limited views of the self through television during the new golden age. This will be her first independent project as a co-producer!

Nick Harris: Director of Photography

Nick Harris has been producing and shooting professional video and film content in Los Angeles for over 15 years. He made a name for himself in cinematography, shooting feature films, commercials, documentaries, reality television, promos and music videos for a host of demanding, high-production-value-seeking clients such as National Geographic Channel, Time Warner Cable Sports, James Franco’s Rabbit Bandini, Google/YouTube (the official corporations), IMAX, and FNX Network. His even more extensive background in a multitude of creative arts has always propelled him to rise above the competition with unique ideas in storytelling, atmosphere, and engaging images that communicate succinctly with his audience in a way that sticks with them.

“My goal every time out is to create a living, breathing world; an atmosphere which you don’t want to leave, and can’t wait to revisit once you’ve gone.”
